The Greatest Feature of a Spiritual Person

compassion- the spiritual india

Once upon a time, a group of teenage boys were having a walk back home with their teacher. The teacher was quite friendly and able to manage to take the boys back with him every day. They came across a park in their midway. One fine day, a boy from the group saw a pair of shoes lying together near the gate of that park. He quickly signaled all the boys, including the teacher, to hide the shoes somewhere & look from the bush about the reaction of the shoe-owner who was inside the park. They all got excited as they want to see and enjoy the perplexity of that person. The teacher told them to change their plan a little bit & assured them that they would enjoy the reaction more if they put two coins in each shoe. The teacher gave that boy two coins to go & put in the shoe while they all hide behind the bushes to watch. A few moments later, that person came outside the park & wore the first shoe, and immediately looked down to figure out the cause of irritation. And to his utter disbelief, he found and took the coin and looked puzzled. He wore the other shoe & find the same phenomenon. Taking both coins in his hands, he knelt down, thanked the almighty while murmured about his children who were waiting for him to bring some food while he was penniless and searching for something in the park. He thanked and thanked again. And left. With gloomy faces and moist eyes, boys came out through the bushes and looked at the teacher. “It is very beautiful to give than to take”, said the teacher smilingly.

The story tells us about – compassion. It resides in each person’s heart. Untouched. There are numerous such instances across the world where compassion comes forth through an act of kindness. Unfortunately, we are fed more with stories of hate and anger.

The strings of a guitar, when touched in a certain way, don’t create music rather it brings the music forth which was always there. Everything is already here, we just need the right way to bring it forward. As Einstein said, “Nothing in this world, can be created nor destroyed, everything is there as it is”. Similarly, compassion lies there, in a different realm altogether. Through our empathy towards a situation, a person, or a thing that eventually brings compassion to the fore. Empathy is the seed through which compassion arises.

A servant enters your room. You are aware but pay no heed towards it. You stay indifferent. You are busy with some work. This is apathy. They tell you about a problem they are in. You try to understand and assures them. You think about ways to help them. This is sympathy. But empathy is beyond apathy & sympathy. Empathy is feeling exactly what the other person is going through. This looks easier said than done, simply because humans have lost this touch somewhere while evolving. Maybe once in a while we get to see or hear about an act out of empathy, especially in mothers or in rare lovers but mostly it has been lost. And hence, no compassion. Surprisingly, animals and trees are still considered to have this trait. Numerous trails have been done by scientists in this regard. A calf is taken in the middle of the ocean while the mother is at the shore, miles away. As they start torturing the calf, the mother feels the pain as well. They leave the calf for some moments, the mother feels relieved. This invisible connection between the mother and her child is nothing but empathy.

Majorly, a person lives a personal and professional life. The ones who balance both, remain quite at peace. The ones who mix both remain a mess altogether. These are two opposite lives. While the latter needs mind in the front, the other needs heart in totality. The silver lining between both the lives is empathy itself. This is the only emotion that works in both lives. Any relation can simply not move forward in harmony which doesn’t have a touch of empathy in it. The leaders in any organization need to be empathetic towards their workers in order to bring the best in them. It is seen globally, that businesses with empathetic managers bring great clientele exposure and numbers speak for them.

A friend said to his friends sitting nearby. ‘Guys, do you all love me?!” While looking towards each other, one of them replied “Of course. Why do you ask?” “Do you know what I needs right now?” asked the first friend. “Well, not really!”, came the reply. “If you don’t know what I need, how can you say you love me!”, inquired the friend.

Empathy is knowing what the person needs. Because it is connected with the heart, the feelings. Humans have no doubt evolved, but they have lost so much as well. Evolved through the mind, the rationale, but lost through the heart. Empathy is a feeling of heart.
The heart is never a Hindu, Muslim, Christian – but the mind is. The ideologies make all the differences and they are always through the mind. The heart knows no ideology because it has no boundaries.

The time has already come for machines to take place of humans. The heads of the humans that is. All the work can be handled by machines. Machines are efficient, can work all the time, no strikes and nuisances. The businesses are moving on. But machines don’t have a heart. We somehow need to work and channelize our energies on the heart part, as we have already lost the mind. The science of our body is such that, when the mind is full, the heart is empty and when the heart is full, the mind is empty. Making the act of empathy as a habit is the only way to bring forth the compassion filled within the heart. Try it now, and if nothing else, it will save your employment in the future! A reason just for the smiles.

Enjoy some quotes of people who have shown this extinct quality to the world – empathy and compassion.

“I call him religious who understands the suffering of others.”
Mahatma Gandhi

‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.’
Nelson mandela

“When I get ready to talk to people, I spend two thirds of the time thinking what they want to hear and one third thinking about what I want to say.”
Abraham Lincoln

“I believe empathy is the most essential quality of civilization.”
Roger Ebert

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.
Dalai Lama

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”
